Peaceful Student Demonstration met with Violence from Indonesian Police

On Monday, September 29, 2020, a peaceful demonstration at the Uncen Jayapura campus in Papua was forcefully disbanded by Indonesian police using tear gas and gunshots. Students gathered to protest amidst ongoing tensions in Papua and West Papua over an increased Indonesian military presence in the region. After shots were fired by Indonesian police, students fled the area to safety. Three students including Salmon Tipagau and Ayus Heluka were arrested and detained as a result of their participation in the peaceful demonstration.
